Thurs 10/19 Film Screening - The Day the Sun Fell

UNCG Sustainability Film and Discussion Series

Oct 19, 6:30PM – The Day the Sun Fell

Location: School of Education Room 114 – just park in the Weatherspoon lot and walk across and down Spring Garden – see a campus map here.

Swiss-Japanese filmmaker Aya Domenig, the granddaughter of a doctor on duty for the Red Cross during the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, approaches the experience of her deceased grandfather by tracing the lives of a doctor and of former nurses who once shared the same experience. While gathering the memories and present views of these very last survivors, the nuclear disaster in Fukushima strikes and history seems to repeat itself.

Discussion leader will be Etsuko Kinefuchi, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies. Her research covers diverse areas including critical inter/cultural communication, ecology and culture, ecofeminism, cultural identities, transnationalism and diaspora, and building intercultural alliances. Kinefuchi has conducted research in post Fukushima Japan. I look forward to her reaction to and interpretation of this important film.
