The Digital Media Commons is pilot testing a 3D printer.
This page gives details on how you can try this service! Including tutorials on creating and finding 3D printable files. Thingiverse offers free files for printing biology sculptures of human vertebrae, molecules, and more.
After the pilot testing period ends on June 30th 2014, there will be a charge for each gram printed ($5 minimum). More details will be available from the Digital Media Commons.

OCLC is beta testing WorldCat Discovery, the next version of our WorldCat library catalog
Currently OCLC is looking for graduate student and faculty feedback. (FYI We expect OCLC to have WorldCat Discovery ready for our library to use before summer 2015)

As we continue to build WorldCat Local functionality into Discovery over the coming months we will use several methods to assess early designs and completed implementations, including interactive, task-based usability studies conducted remotely via WebEx. Currently, we are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students as well as library staff to participate in these studies. End of semester book renewals & Library access after graduation
Congratulations on completing your semester!
Here are some reminders about library access.
At this point, students can't renew books until they register for summer or fall classes. It will take at least a day after registration for accounts to be updated so that you can renew books again.
Instructions for book renewal are on this page. Please contact your friendly health sciences librarian (laleinin@uncg.edu) or the Check Out Desk (336-334-5304) if you have questions.
Graduating?
You can join Friends of the Library to get book checkout privileges. . Borrowing privileges for alumni and Friends of the Library are described on this page.
And you can continue to visit the University Libraries in person to use print and most online subscriptions

PubMed - Now with links to UNCG full text!!
PubMed (Medline), the free guide to health care articles, now has links to UNCG full text!
You must get into PubMed through a UNCG libraries link! There are lots of paths into PubMed through the library, this is the fastest.
1. On the libraries home page, choose Databases.
2. Choose PubMed.
3. In PubMed, perform any search. Click into a title to see a longer description of this result. You should see a UNCG logo in the top right corner.
4. That UNCG logo will lead into our Journals A to Z list. Click into "View full text," to navigate to the article.
5. IF you see "Online resource not found," look below that error message. Sometimes there is a link to UNCG full text, or a summary of the years that we own in print for this journal.
Otherwise, look to the RIGHT of the "online not found" error for a link into the Interlibrary Loan Service. Log in with your UNCG computer account and you can ask ILL staff to find a pdf for you.

FASTR - Proposed legislation would increase open access requirements
FASTR, the "Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act" has been introduced on both sides of Congress and referred to committees.
If passed, this bill would require
FASTR is also related to the recently announced policy of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Like FASTR, the OSTP memo requires agencies to address peer reviewed publications. Unlike FASTR, this memo also requires federal agencies to address research data. Keep in mind, the OSTP policy is not a law. It is only in effect during the current administration. Who knows what will happen in two years?

"Federal agenc(ies) with extramural research expenditures of over $100,000,000 (to) develop a ... public access policy...for the collection and depositing of papers...from research supported...from funding by the Federal Government..not later than 6 months after publication in peer reviewed journals..."
FASTR is based on the NIH Open Access Policy, which currently requires scientists to "submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts...(arising) from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central...(to be made) accessible to the public (within) 12 months of publication..."-From version S.350 of this bill, introduced 2/14/2014

CINAHL and other Ebsco databases might go down this Friday evening 3/28/2014
I just received this message that EBSCO will be working on CINAHL and some other databases between 9 pm and 11 pm EST this Friday 3/28/2014. These databases might not work during this time.
So night owls, plan ahead and do your research some other evening this week!
On Friday, March 28th, 2014, EBSCOhost databases and services may be intermittently unavailable while EBSCO performs network upgrades. The service window is scheduled to begin at 9:00 PM EDT and end at 11:00 PM EDT. Patrons may experience intermittent access to EBSCOhost products and services for the duration of the service window.
So night owls, plan ahead and do your research some other evening this week!
