As you collect and evaluate papers and projects this semester please keep the University Libraries' Undergraduate Research Award in mind.

This $500 prize is given in recognition of an outstanding undergraduate research project that best demonstrates the ability to locate, select, and synthesize information from scholarly resources and uses those resources in the creation of an original research project in any media. 

Any paper or project completed by an undergraduate in the Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters of 2018 is eligible. Applicants must be enrolled at UNCG in the Spring 2019 semester.  It is open to all undergraduate students.  

 If your students have turned in excellent research assignments, we urge you to nominate them for this award.

Textbook affordability Mini Grants

Deciding on next year’s textbook adoption? Learn about ways to save your students money

Are you interested in bringing down the cost of textbooks for your students?  The high cost of commercial textbooks (print and electronic) is a major concern for both students and their parents.  A continuing program at UNCG encourages you to do something about that concern.

The Office of the Provost and the University Libraries are joining together to support UNCG’s Open Education “Mini-Grants” initiative to encourage instructors to use low-cost or free alternatives to expensive course materials; these can include open-access scholarly resources, library-licensed and owned resources, and learning objects and texts that faculty create themselves.

Fifteen $1000 “mini-grants” will be available this Spring and are meant to offer an incentive for the time it will take faculty to identify new resources, adjust syllabi, and modify assignments and can also be used to cover any actual expenses you incur.

If you are interested in applying for these “mini-grants”, you are encouraged to attend one of the Open Education Initiative information sessions to be held February 4^th  or 5^th  from 12 pm to 1 pm in Jackson Library Room 216. (Drinks and dessert will be provided you are welcome to bring your lunch) Please RSVP prior to the workshop or direct your questions to Beth Bernhardt at brbernha@uncg.edu.

Jan 17 free lunch and film screening "Paywall : The Business of Scholarship"

Join the Faculty Senate Scholarly Communications Committee and the University Libraries in the showing of the movie “Paywall : The Business of Scholarship.” The movie, produced by Jason Schmitt, provides focus on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40 percent profit margin associated with the top academic publisher, Elsevier, and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google. The movie is one hour in length followed by a discussion on the topic.
